Maria Carrillo junior advances to state finals of “Poetry Out Loud”

Maria Carrillo High’s Brynna Thigpen will represent Sonoma County at the state finals of the “California Poetry Out Loud” competition next month in Sacramento.

Thigpen, a junior, won first place at the county competition held earlier this month in Santa Rosa. Students from 13 schools participated. Those students previously had been named the winners at their school competitions.

At the county competition, Montgomery High’s Kennedy Petersen was named first runner-up. Kira Findling of Santa Rosa High was second runner-up, and Elizabeth Marrone of Cloverdale High and Maria Nolasco of Roseland University Prep tied for third.

The competition was started by the National Endowment for the Arts to engage high-school students in the presentation of poetry through memorization and performance. The state contest is run by the California Arts Council and its finals will be March 25 and 26. The winner will advance to the national finals.

The Arts Council of Sonoma County helped sponsor the county competition.
